WATER ALERTS IN MEXICO – UPDATE January 6, 2026

As of December 2025, approximately 7% (160139 square kilometers) of Mexico is under drought conditions and 13% (319392 square kilometers) is Abnormally dry. A small territorial decrease since our last report, as drought keeps receding across Mexico.

Only Ojinaga is under Extreme Drought, upgraded from Severe Drought. All other locations have now been downgraded to either Moderate Drought or Abnormally dry.



There are 4 Levels of Drought in Mexico:

D0 (Abnormally Dry): Conditions are drier than normal, potentially leading to the start of a drought.

D1 (Moderate Drought): Drought is beginning to impact agriculture, water supplies, and ecosystems.

D2 (Severe Drought): Significant impacts are seen on agriculture, water resources, and ecosystems, potentially including wildfires.

D3 (Extreme Drought): Extensive crop and pasture losses are likely, and water shortages are widespread.

D4 (Exceptional Drought): Widespread and persistent water shortages, with major crop and pasture losses, and potential for ecological damage.
