WATER ALERTS IN MEXICO – UPDATE July 31, 2025

As of July 2025 approximately 19% (457248 square kilometers) of Mexico is under drought conditions and 16% (382111 square kilometers) is Abnormally dry. A significant territorial decrease since our previous report. Heavy rains in July have considerably improved water levels.

Off Map 5 Drought Alerts have been downgraded to Severe Drought or Abnormally Dry and taken off the map: Guasave, Mazatlán, Guamúchil, Rocky Point, Guaymas; 14 alerts remain. Most alerts are in northwest area of the country along the US border.

Downgraded to Extreme Drought from Exceptional Drought:

Upgraded to Exceptional Drought from Extreme Drought:
Nuevo Casas Grandes, Ciudad Obregón

There are 4 Levels of Drought in Mexico:

D0 (Abnormally Dry): Conditions are drier than normal, potentially leading to the start of a drought.

D1 (Moderate Drought): Drought is beginning to impact agriculture, water supplies, and ecosystems.

D2 (Severe Drought): Significant impacts are seen on agriculture, water resources, and ecosystems, potentially including wildfires.

D3 (Extreme Drought): Extensive crop and pasture losses are likely, and water shortages are widespread.

D4 (Exceptional Drought): Widespread and persistent water shortages, with major crop and pasture losses, and potential for ecological damage.
